Ogaden Somalis file Ethiopia ICC complaint

Ogaden community in South Africa lodges complaint with international court over alleged Ethiopian human rights abuses.

The Ogaden Somali Community in South Africa has filed a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC), urging an investigation into the actions of the Ethiopian government against the Ogaden people.

In a statement released on Tuesday on behalf of the community, a South African media advocacy group, Media Review Network, called on ICC authorities to probe complaints of alleged crimes in the Ogaden region of Ethiopia.

Selective Justice at The Hague: Charging Kenyans and Ignoring Ethiopian Criminals

This past week the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague has charged four prominent Kenyan politicians of committing ‘crimes against humanity’ in connection with their role in the post-election violence of 2007/08.

The ICC has confirmed charges against Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Uhuru Kenyatta (who has since resigned from the finance post), Cabinet secretary Francis Kirimi Muthaura, former Education Minister William Samoei Ruto, radio executive and Kass FM presenter Joshua Arap Sang, while the charges against Tinderet MP Henry Kosgey and former Police Commissioner Hussein Ali were not confirmed because of ‘insufficient grounds’ to sustain them.

Five Europeans Killed in Attack in Ethiopia

(Reuters) - Gunmen killed five European tourists and kidnapped two further foreigners and two Ethiopians in northern Ethiopia's remote Afar region where separatist rebels have operated, the government said on Wednesday.

Ethiopian government spokesman Bereket Simon said two Germans, two Hungarians and an Austrian died in the dawn attack Tuesday in an arid area prone to banditry.

Wednesday afternoon, 11 tired-looking survivors still dressed in trekking clothing arrived by plane in the capital, Addis Ababa.

Ethiopian Regional Leader said to Admit Role in Ethnic Killings

The president of a volatile Ethiopian regional state has been fired from his party leadership position after reportedly admitting involvement in a 2003 ethnic massacre. The leadership of the southern Gambella region is coming under increasing scrutiny for corruption and abusing the rule of law.

Two privately-owned Ethiopian newspapers are reporting Gambella Regional President Omod Obang Olum has been removed from his post as head of the ruling Gambella Peoples' Democratic Movement.  The GPDM is affiliated with the country's ruling party, the Ethiopian Peoples Revolutionary Democratic Front.
